Inspecting a used powersports vehicle is one of the most important parts of the buying process. Without a proper inspection, you run the risk of purchasing a model with multiple repairs and maintenance issues and a decreased service life. To ensure this doesn’t happen to you, be sure to check out our inspection tips below.

Start the Vehicle

If you’re planning on purchasing a used powersports vehicle, we strongly recommend setting up a test ride with your model. This will give you the opportunity to see how compatible your vehicle is with your driving style, as well as check for various maintenance red flags that may indicate you want to skip out on the sale. If your dealership doesn’t offer test rides, we recommend asking your salesperson if you could at least start the vehicle to ensure it doesn’t have trouble turning over, or release any suspicious smoke upon starting.

Inspect the Frame & Driveline

During your inspection, be sure to inspect the frame and driveline of your used powersports vehicle to ensure there aren’t any signs of serious damage or disrepair. Your frame shouldn’t have any noticeable bends or cracks, and your driveline shouldn’t have any bent axles or cracked CV boots. For motorcycle or dirt bike buyers, your model may not have a driveline, and you’ll need to inspect your chain for any rust or damage instead.

Examine Fluids, Shocks, & Tires

Once the frame and engine check out, move on to inspecting your used powersports vehicle’s fluids. Check that there are no signs of discoloration, debris, or condensation in any of the reservoirs or tubing. Next, examine your tires for extreme or uneven wear, and watch out for stock-on objects that could lead to a flat. Finally, touch the shocks of your vehicle to ensure they’re not wet, as this may indicate your vehicle is leaking.
